Recently, when serving as chaplain on the beautiful island of Ynys Enlli, off the Welsh North Coast I was mesmerised by the colours of the island! It was if I had put on a new pair of spectacles! Colours seemed to 'pop' out and engulf me like never before.

This painting seeks to capture the Naples yellow that seems to hug the island most summer evenings. (Apart from when it's wet and grey!)
I also wanted to capture the thin space that is so often referred to, to describe the island. It's a tern used to describe the gap between heaven and earth that is paper thin. In reality though, we can encounter thin spaces throughout the ordinary and day to day. God's presence is not just for remote holy islands. It is for the school runs, loo breaks and zoom meetings. He comes to meet with us in meal times, bed times and all times. He loves to meet with us!
Psalm 84 declares:
How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord Almighty! My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young—a place near your altar, Lord Almighty, my King and my God. Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you.
A prayer:
Lord God, help me to spot your presence in all I do. To see the 'thin space' in the ordinary. Help me to sense you draw near as I pause now and take time to consider your closeness. In all times may I know that you are with me. Thank you that you call me into a living relationship with you, where we can walk hand in hand throughout the day, amen.
