When on the island of Bardsey where I serve as chaplain I had a profoundly spiritual experience when I wasn't expecting it! It happened while I was experimenting with some abstract art in a workshop with island artist in residence Carol.

I was drawing using wax on paper blindfolded and as I did I had the word 'binding' going through my being. I pictured me binding the works of the devil and all his wicked schemes.

I then added some charcoal and darker colours and had the word 'loosing' as I applied them, I pictured all the freedom that Jesus brings and the good things he wants to do in people's lives.

As I was doing this the artist passed me a nail (look at the pictures in the painting description pictures above) so that I could make some marks in the drawing. As I held the nail I had that deep sense within my being of the power of what Jesus has done. It is through his sacrifice and life given for me, that the power of the loosening flows.

Here is what one commentator says of the terms binding and loosing:

In Hebrew: δεῖν and λύειν; probably from Heb. אָסַרH673. Terms commonly used throughout the NT in a general sense, but together in a specifically eschatological context in Matthew 16:19 and 18:18 in particular, to refer to the act of being put under the power and control of Satan or of being released from that power through the dawning of the kingdom of God.

This painting is all about the loosening of people and situations and bringing about freedom!

This painting measures 120cm by 120cm and is painted using wax, acrylic paints and inks and spray paint. It is painted on a beauty if a chunky canvas. It is very textured and contains lots of marks and layers. It uses some of those experiences I had in the studio using wax and of course that nail which I was given, to make marks.
