This large abstract piece is based on some verses from Job 28: ‘When he established the force of the wind and measures out the waters, when he made a decree for the rain and a path for the thunderstorm, then he looked at wisdom and appraised it, he confirmed it and tested it. And he said to the human race, the fear of the Lord- that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.’ Job 28.28

Other versions of the Bible describe ‘shunning evil’ as turning from sin.

God told us, “Wisdom means that you respect me, the Lord, and turn from sin.” (CEV)

And yet another as depart from evil.

And he said to humankind,

‘Truly, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom;
    and to depart from evil is understanding.’ (NRSV)

This painting seeks to capture the three elements that Job saw. Wind, waters and wisdom. Layered upon the three sections are layers representing the turning away from evil and living a life of closeness to God. Gold is used liberally, in paint, spray and gold leaf too.

Layers of light represent the ‘apprised wisdom’ and the summary that speaks to my spirit: fear (respect and love for) God and turning away from evil is what is required from me.
